NCB-AVIATION HOUR BUILDING

Frequently asked questions

If you plan on joining us on hour building, please take the time to read this FAQ

HOW DO I BOOK (only for international pilots)?

This information is available in our GET STARTED & CHECK-IN section

HOW LONG DOES THE JAA TO FAA VALIDATION TAKE?

You must send your request for FAA validation to the FAA in Oklahoma at least 6 weeks before your planned arrival date.

NCB-AVIATION may refuse to handle your hour building if you do not comply with this requirement!!

For instructions, go to GET STARTED & CHECK-IN

We don't particularily appreciate people who wait until the last minute to get things done. It puts unnecessary pressure on yourself and on us.

HOW IS THE WEATHER IN OHIO?

Average daily available flying weather from sunrise to sunset with temperature, cloud, visibility and wind considerations:

  • March to May: 5 hours
  • May to October: 8 hours
  • October to December: 5 hours
  • December to March: 1~3 hours with runway condition considerations

The typical weather pattern during the summer:

  • sunny or hazy with occasional mist in the early morning after sunrise
  • generally sunny from 8:00 to 13:00
  • sunny or thunderstorms from 13:00 to 17:00
  • sunny from 17:00 to sunset

HOW DO YOU SCHEDULE YOUR FLIGHTS?

An online booking program is used for booking. You will receive login information at your arrival and you can use the computer in the lobby to book your aircraft.

YOU ARE NOT COMFORTBALE WITH YOUR ENGLISH?

Not a problem! Take advantage of this opportunity to improve your English. The American VFR ATC English phraseology is almost the same as the Europe one. We assist all pilots and more particularily French pilots with English ATC phraseology.

Our staff speaks many other languages if you require any particular assistance.

FAA, for your own safety, requires basic speaking and understanding of English for issuance of FAA license.

You can ask the instructor to fly with you for as long as you don't feel comfortable to fly on your own. To save money, you can also ask local pilots to fly with you. NCB-AVIATION can provide you with contact information of some local pilots.

IF I FINISH MY PROGRAMMED HOURS EARLY, CAN I BUY ADDITIONAL HOURS?

Of course! We will only charge you the following rates: (updated 23/03/2011)

  • Cessna 150: 68$ per hour
  • Cessna 152: 73$ per hour
  • Cessna 172: 95$ per hour

All above rates include sales tax

HOW MANY HOURS OF BRIEFING/CHECK-OUT WILL I NEED?

The ground briefing usually lasts 2 hours.

If you have already flown the type of aircraft you are renting, expect a 3 hours flight check-out to get accustomed to our airport and the area.

If you have never flown the type, expect a 5 hours flight check-out to learn the characteristics of the aircraft you will be flying.

HOW MANY HOURS CAN I FLY ON A SINGLE DAY?

We allow you to fly up to 7 hours per day. For over 5 hours per day, plan rest times accordingly. KNOW YOUR LIMITS!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I CAN NOT FINISH THE BLOCK HOURS?

For 50 Hours Blocks, a minimum of 16 days, for 100 Hours Blocks, a minimum of 30 days of accommodation shall be booked.

No refunds are given for purchased block time except in exceptional circumstances for which NCB-AVIATION considers a refund to be justified.

'Bad weather' will in no circumstance justify a refund as motivated and disciplined individuals have achieved our programs in the past without hassle.

Disciplined and responsible attitudes are expected at all times.

Complacency (Waking up at 9 am, starting up engines at noon, then blaming lack of flying to the weather) will not be appreciated.

Do not expect to fly 3 hours per day, every day. Take advantage of beautiful days to fly as much as you can, rest on bad days.

WHAT TO DO ON RAINY DAYS?

You will not waste your rainy days:

  • Go to Cleveland or other areas for a shopping/tourist visit.
  • Go to Dayton Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to visit the National Air Force museum so you can admire the world's largest collection of military aircraft and to downtown Dayton to visit the Wright Brothers' Bicycle shop.

WHERE/WHAT WILL I EAT, HOW WILL I DO MY LAUNDRY DURING MY STAY?

There are around 20 restaurants in the vicinity of the Legacy Inn Hotel. Known brands are: Burger King, Arby's, KFC, McDonnald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc...  Classic restaurants such as Marie's, Applebee's grill, China Express, etc... are also available.

The average cost of a meal ranges from 4 to 12$.

You also have the possibility to buy food and drinks at one of the giant supermarkets in the area: Giant Eagle, Walmart, Buehler's. .

For pilots staying at the airport accommodation, there is a farm market across the street from the airport where you can buy fresh products.

A laundry service is provided by the Legacy Inn Hotel against charge.

A coin laundry is available at the airport.

NCB-AVIATION provides laundry baskets, irons and iron boards on request.

IS A TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIRED?

The travel insurance is not required but is highly recommended. In 2008, 10% of our students have used their travel insurance.

HOW DO I BUY AIRCRAFT RENTER'S INSURANCE?

We will help you through this process. Our insurance broker has agreed to insure non-US citizens but special procedures apply.

Each pilot will receive a personal pre-clearance (depending on type of aircraft to fly, duration and experience) and therefore, you must send us your insurance form at least 8 weeks prior to your planned arrival date.

HOW DO I PAY FOR THE HOUR BUILDING?

You are asked to pay the full block time, administration fee and time building kit, cash before start of your flying.

If you are not comfortable with paying everything upfront, for 100 hour blocks it is possible to split the payment in two payments of 50%, with the remaining 50% to be paid before halfway the block and adding a fee of 50$.

For pilots who are concerned about carrying large amounts of money during their travel to the U.S., consider using your credit cards (Master Card or Visa)  to pay. A 4% fee applies to credit card payment as credit card companies charge this fee to the vendors.

You will pay the instruction fees directly to your instructor.

Accommodation will be paid in full at check-in at the hotel or the airport.
